  • 00:23 - γͺい (non-exist) is the basis of negatives in Japanese. It is the opposite of γ‚γ‚‹γ€€οΌˆexists).
  • 01:04 - As γͺい is describing a state of non-action, it is an adjective (unlike ある which is a verb).
  • 02:02 - To state that something is not some other specified thing (e.g, this is not a pen, this is not a human). Lets take the example γ“γ‚Œγ―γΊγ‚“γ§γ―γͺい (this is not a pen). The thing that you are trying to state that something is not (pen in this case) must be marked with で (だ placed into the て form) to give it the meaning of β€œis x”. The は particle is appended to this で to flag it as the topic. The sentence is then ended with the γͺい adjective to turn it into a negative. ぺんでは (is pen) now means β€œis not pen” due to the appended γͺい.
  • 02:23 - To put a godan verb into the negative γͺい must be attached to the あ-stem of the verb. Verbs can only end in う-row kana (う, く, す, ぀, ぬ, ぢ, γ‚€, γ‚‹). These can be transformed into four alternative β€œstems” or endings (あ-stem, い-stem, え-stem, お-stem). To form the あ stem, the last kana of the verb is shifted from the う-stem to the あ stem (う β†’ わ, く β†’ か, す β†’ さ, ぀ β†’ た, β†’ ぬ β†’ γͺ, ぢ β†’ ば, γ‚€ β†’ ま, γ‚‹ β†’ ら).
  • 05:46 - To place ichidan verbs into the negative, you remove γ‚‹ and attach γͺい.
  • 06:08 - To append something to an adjective you remove the い and replace it with く. You can then append to the く (e.g あかい β†’ あかくγͺい, こわい β†’ こわくγͺい). This is how you negate an adjective, and also how you put them into the て-form.
  • 06:56 - To put an adjective into past tense you remove the い and replace it with γ‹γ£γŸ (こわい β†’ γ“γ‚γ‹γ£γŸ). Placing an adjective into the negative past tense is the same but with γͺγ‹γ£γŸ instead.
  • 08:54 - A verb that is an exception to the prior rule regarding transformation into the negative is ます. ます does not become まさγͺい, it becomes ません.
  • 09:43 - Another exception is いい, as it is really a shorthand for γ‚ˆγ„, it turns back into γ‚ˆγ„ when making a transformation. いい does not become γ„γ‹γ£γŸ or いくγͺい, it becomes γ‚ˆγ‹γ£γŸ and γ‚ˆγγͺい.
