Cartesian dualism makes the error of reifying consciousness—holding it as a material substance when it is not. It makes this error when dividing reality into both res cogitans (mental) and res extensa (physical)—separating the mind and body into these two distinct substances. It is an attempt to apply to consciousness a category derived from the physical world.
