Self-awareness pre-supposes external awareness

In order to be self-aware one must first have awareness of something external as the concept of consciousness is formed through introspection, and introspection pre-supposes extrospection.1

Example

You notice you’re thinking about a tree—this “self-awareness” comes only after your direct awareness of the tree.
