Using adjectives as targets

In order to use an adjective as a target, remove the い ending and replace it with く.¹

Example: Sakura became beautiful

さくらが美しくなった

In this example, さくら is marked with が, making her the subject.

なる is a verb meaning to become. In this case it is placed into the past tense with the った form, changing the meaning to became.

美しい is an adjective meaning beautiful, it is altered by removing the い ending and replacing it with く. This makes it suitable for use as a target.
